Hiwaga ng Panahon: Ulan Review [originally posted on Facebook March 18,2019]

Ulan is a tale of life and love's reality that is seamlessly merged with magic and imagination. A beautiful and inspirational story that created a visual feast that left me in awe, paired with an equally beautiful scoring and cast that literally brought the characters to life. The audience were treated to experience the glory of fantasy while still having a grasp of reality, reality in its truest form. The shifts were so flawless and I enjoyed every bit of it. I'm a huge Studio Ghibli fan and a JaDine fan at that so hearing the background music while seeing Nadine on screen as Maya flooded me with feels and happiness like how No-face was almost drifted by the waves at the train station. Ang galing din ng cinematography and yung kulay while the story shifts POVs between young and adult Maya, distinct yung dalawa eh so hindi ka malilito kahit madalas biglang nag-iiba yung scene. Hindi ako movie expert but as a moviegoer all the technical aspects present in this movie were so subtle that you won't even notice they were using CGI (?) for the Tikbalang's hand, ang alam mo lang is she's comforting Maya as well as you as an audience after ng sunod-sunod na buhos ng damdamin. I like that I was watching two different times of a woman's life but both stories of young and adult Maya did not clash, hindi chaotic, hindi confusing kasi very subtle sya in the sense that Maya changed a lot through the years but you can still see bits of the young Maya; dreamy, aspirational and innocent Maya.
We could say that the plot is not new - brokenhearted girl meets a young free spirited nice guy - pero the way the whole story unfolded all throughout the movie until the end is very new, I think the very unique narrative has a lot to do with that plus injecting magical realism in a Filipino movie was a surprise. Yung storytelling that was applied sa movie is very unconventional. This simple plot can easily become cliché but because hindi sya focused mainly sa plot but more on the characters themselves and how they affected each other's life rather than the plot itself it convinced me that Ulan is far from cliché love stories we watch on TV or sa big screen.
The director really knows what she wants and how she would convey the message to us viewers. I just want to share one scene I really love sa movie; sa umpisa, Maya was buying a cake habang umuulan and then she went out of the store, walked pass the wet concrete pathway and then the camera focused on her feet while water was splashing as she stepped on it. That simple camera pan was so solid and then I was sold.
The cast were chosen by the the story itself, I couldn't see anyone else playing the role of Maya but Nadine Lustre and the camera loves her. I can't believe Carlo Aquino was not the first choice to play Peter. Ang smooth ng batuhan nila ng lines, walang overly dramatic scenes like we commonly see with other movies. Yung silent scenes nilang dalawa didn't require any dialogue for us to feel the emotion the actors and director want to convey. Mark and Andrew were roles played by actors whom Nadine is already acquainted with so the chemistry on screen was automatic. Topi was played by Josef Elizalde whom I believe Nadine only meet on set but their chemistry as friends looks so authentic. Maya's Lola, Uncle and Antie were played by actors that were honed by experience and I love how they naturally delivered each scene they were in, it amazes me. I just want to specifically point out how Andrea del Rosario was so good and how I love her character. Siya yung Tita na parang mataray at akala mo minamaltrato nya si Maya like an evil stepmother but no; she's this madada but genuinely loving Tita we all wanna have *wipes single tear from left eye* - I want halo-halo too. Leo Martinez played a short but sweet role. All the mythical creatures in the movie were oddly satisfying to watch lol. Even the cameo's "oohh..ahh" amused me hahaha.
Ulan deserves to be seen...seen not just by any paying viewer but those who are smart enough to discover its symbolism and artistic value.
Sa mga di pa nakakanood, BAKIT?

Girl Group: Little Mix

You might have recently heard the song 'Secret Love Song'. At first I thought it was just another pop song sang by Jason Derulo - or does he sing R&B? - and I didn't even knew that it was a duet. Honestly I was just told about it, I haven't even heard it on the radio neither did I watch it on YouTube - I didn't care about some cheesy love song. But then it became a talk of the town here - at least on our place - and I saw a girl on a viral video singing it. Just by hearing the first line, it got me hooked to the song already and by hooked I mean I am listening to it on YouTube on repeat (listenonrepeat.com). Not that I'm already a fan of Jason Derulo nor Little Mix in the first place but this specific song got me really interested about this British Girl group - yeah let's veer away from Jason for now.

Yes, because of my fascination to them I've written this blog - please refer to the title and the featured image if you still aren't sure. I became a fan of Jade, Leigh Anne, Jessy and Perrie over night after hearing the song 'Secret Love Song'. Most of you might have heard many of their other singles - Black Magic, Love Me Like You, Salute, Hair, just to name a few -  but 'Secret Love Song' made me realize that a girl group like Little Mix deserves a to be on top. They are not just a bunch of pretty girls who can sing and dance but they are indeed power house performers because they don't just sing songs, they connect to their listeners and they could make us want to hear more and their voices are just amazing (understatement).

Girl groups are known to be having just one soloist who has the best singing voice and the others will pretty much sing in back-up but that concept is not known to exist on this group. All of them can sing impressively and their songs are commonly divided for each of them to have their own parts and no one outshines the other because the four of them shine's equally on each piece as demonstrated on the video below.

Quality Voices

They have these unique voices that is distinct to them, a signature tone - I am not a music expert nor a person who can sing in tune so I can't tell what they call that exactly. It really sounds so good that me as a none singer would even dream of having but probably not for now, I'll just settle on lip syncing them and not letting my own voice come out because I'm sure it will wake my neighbors and they would start to mob me.

I do not know how they do that but every time I listen to them without watching, I can't tell who is singing which part. They have the same yet distinct voices. I'm not sure if that makes sense to you but that is what I've observed. Maybe it's just a newbie fan thing that I can't differentiate their voices because I haven't heard them that many times yet. But I'm pretty sure an average of 30 repeats per day will do the trick - nope, I never get tired of the song nor any of their songs for that matter.

Well anyways, I probably should start with this video to and try to get to know those voices better. You too should do the same and what ever your thoughts are just comment them down below and let's discuss about these amazing and talented performers. Also don't forget to like and share.

How Is It Like To Be Really Broke

First, this is not a blog about love nor the 'Ways To Mend a Broken Heart'. My God people! Not everyone has a love life or ever had one - yeah guilty. And this is not about me not ever having a relationship, so don't ask anything even closely related to that or I'll punch you in the esophagus (if I spelled it right).

Now, how is it really like to be really broke? At this point the best person to ask is my neighbor, duh of course me! Since I am as broke as students were during summer. As broke as a contractual employee after one month of being laid off and still hasn't find a new job. As broke as a social climber who had a credit card and decided to have a shopping spree and then at the end of the month nagged his wife about their credit card bill being that high. Yes, I am that broke but no I'm not one of those stupid social climbers who spent their credit limits and also became broke after they had their bill, [whisper] but they leave next doors in the old house - I'm such a gossip-monger.

Chai Romruen and James Reid: Versions of Each Other

Many of you are probably fans of Fil-Aussie James Reid. He emerged to ultimate stardom not only here in PH but also all over the world - for he and his Reel to Real life love Nadine Lustre will soon be featured in [ehem] Teen Vogue (see the Instagram post here...) - after the success of their first and launching movie Diary ng Panget - and I am pretty sure that everyone knows what that is. Then we have OTWOL, their series of sold out concerts here and across the globe and the book, yes the book #TeamReal. It is a compilation of stories, events, moments and OJD put into words by a talented and fierce writer Irish Dizon [please notice me, I'm a fan]. The excitement about what's next for this multi-talented couple just excites everyone not only the JaDines (JaDine fans) [ehem guilty - of course I'm a fan. Why do you think I am writing this? To earn clicks? Well...] but also the Bashers. Yes The Bashers... Bashers, admit it or not  you are actually updating yourselves on what JaDine are up to. You  are even more updated than me and I'm an avid fan. Luh...

Well anyways, I am not writing this blog to talk about the obvious success of this Team up (maybe on my next blog). I am here to discuss about how I find Mako Mermaids actor Chai Romruen and James Reid very much alike - some may react and disagree, but hey this is my blog, I can say whatever I please. So scram.

Back to Chai and James. Same with James, Chai is also part Aussie. His Father is Thai and his Mother is Australian. He might be mistaken with a Filipino blood because of how he looks but there is no denying that his Aussie mix gives him that distinct look that girls will surely drool over [ehem, again].
